Rowan University Embarks on Medical School Addition

SEWELL, N.J.—Rowan University, located in the southern portion of New Jersey, is adding an entirely new medical training facility to its profile.
The Rowan Medicine Center–Cumberland will focus on the mental and physical health of families around South Jersey, specifically along the Route 55 corridor. Nearby Garrison Architects, which has already done work for the Rowan College of South Jersey medical program, will be designing this project as well. However, no contractor has yet been announced, according to an email sent to School Construction News from the university.
The two-story Rowan Medicine Center–Cumberland will contain over 17,000 square feet of educational and medical space. In addition to areas for medical students to practice working with patients, the new facility will focus heavily on addiction and recovery treatment. The facility will also host the Child Abuse Research Education and Service Institute (CARES).
“As the state’s only osteopathic medical school, we take great pride in being able to provide high quality, team-based specialized services to our South Jersey neighbors who might not have access to this type of care,” Dr. Thomas Cavalieri, dean of Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, said in a news release from the university. “Our Rowan Medicine team looks forward to becoming part of the RCSJ community in Cumberland County, serving patients and partnering with them for healthier outcomes.”
Added New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney: “Today, Rowan is among the top 100 public research universities in the nation, and Rowan College of South Jersey is the state’s most forward-looking community college. Their partnership has led not only to a new model for higher education, but now is demonstrating how to bring much-needed specialized medical services to communities in need.”
“Building Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine facilities on RCSJ campuses broadens our service area while bringing specialized health care to communities with growing needs,” added Dr. Ali A. Houshmand, president of Rowan University.
The Rowan Medicine Center’s Cumberland campus building will become a part of Rowan’s Route 55 “EDs, MEDs and Commerce Corridor.”
