OWINGS, MD.—General contractor Scheibel Construction has been awarded the Associated Builders and Contractors Chesapeake Shores 2021 Excellence in Construction & Safety Awards for its work at Northern High School. The award recognized Scheibel in the category of institutional project refurbishment in the range of $25 million to $100 million.
According to Scheibel’s project portfolio website, their work entailed adding an addition to the Mary Harrison Cultural Arts Center, as well as constructing an administration building and the new 204,000-square-foot school itself. Scheibel also had to demolish the original high school and gymnasium so that their replacements could be fashioned on the same land. The exterior work included repositioning the parking and bus docking area as well.
The project achieved LEED Silver status thanks to a geothermal field located under the baseball field, gym, media center, classroom building and cafeteria, thereby reducing the project’s overall carbon footprint.
Other work entailed rehabilitating Northern’s stadium and installing new lighting and spectator grandstands.
Scheibel Construction worked at Northern High School along with GWWO Architects.
