She will be responsible for growing the firm’s presence in Texas, working with K-12 education clients and communities to elevate educational opportunities for all students. Kinney is a Texas native who has successfully led the strategy, visioning, planning and design of more than 2 million square feet of learning space nationally and internationally. During Kinney’s 15 years of developing facilities to support new educational models, she has seen her clients face increasingly complex challenges. She incorporates current developmental research, environmental psychology and organizational psychology to design facilities that respond to human learning and behavior.

Omaha, Neb.-headquartered HDR recently announced that H. Michael Smith, AIA, LEED AP, has joined the firm as a director for HDR’s Education, Science, Tech (EST) program. He will lead the EST program in Charlotte, N.C.; Atlanta; Tampa, Fla.; Dallas and Houston, and will develop and nurture strong relationships with clients and institutions across the academic, science and technology sectors. With more than three decades of experience, Smith has devoted his career to designing facilities that advance some of society’s most ambitious and important research goals in the academic, science and technology sectors. These projects have included academic and biomedical teaching and research laboratories, biotechnology and pharmaceutical research and production facilities, cleanrooms for the manufacturing of microelectronics and medical devices, and animal research facilities. In 2013, he joined the board of directors for the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, Calif., helping advance its mission for developing innovative solutions for health care through biomedical discovery.

Nick Stephenson, an associate with education industry planning, design and construction management firm Quattrocchi Kwok Architects (QKA), earned the Accredited Learning Environments Planner (ALEP) designation, a mark of excellence that reflects the knowledge, skills and abilities of a competent educational facility planner. The ALEP credential, developed by the Association for Learning Environments, was designed to elevate professional standards, enhance individual performance and identify those in the educational environment industry who demonstrate the knowledge essential to the practice of educational facility planning. Stephenson has been with QKA since 1997 and has worked in all phases of architectural services for education projects, including master planning, programming, schematic design, design development and construction documentation. Well versed in consultant coordination, green building practices and construction administration, Stephenson’s projects include the Mendocino High School Performing Arts facility and significant modernization work for Fort Bragg Middle School — both of which garnered design awards.

He is a member of the American Planning Association.

Coker, an associate principal and senior designer, has been with Dewberry for more than 28 years. She specializes in interior design for higher education, justice, fitness and recreation, commercial and corporate facilities projects. In her new role as office director, she will oversee the architecture practice in the Peoria office as well as direct Dewberry’s national interior design practice. Coker earned a bachelor’s degree in design from the University of Florida. She is a registered interior designer in Illinois and a LEED accredited professional. She serves on the board of directors for the Children’s Home Foundation and is a member of Peoria Business Boosters.

Kristine A. Harding, NCARB, AIA, was recently inaugurated as the 97th president of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). In this new role, Harding will lead NCARB and its 54 U.S. licensing boards, which serve more than 40,000 NCARB certified architects and 41,000 licensure candidates. As president, Harding will focus on implementing NCARB’s new experience and examination programs, enhancing benefits to the NCARB certificate and streamlining the path to licensure. Harding was first appointed to the Alabama Board for Registration of Architects in 2004, where she served as chair from 2008 to 2009 and continues to serve on the board. In 2011, she was elected to the NCARB Board of Directors to represent the Southern Conference. As vice president and group manager of the Huntsville, Ala., office of the KPS Group, Harding provides architecture, interior design and planning services throughout the southeast.

Gregory L. Erny, NCARB, AIA, was recently elected first vice president/president-elect of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). By virtue of his election, Erny will become NCARB president in July 2017. Erny was first appointed to the Nevada Board of Architecture, Interior Design and Residential Design in 1996, serving as chair from 2011-2013. Since 2008, he has served in several positions on the NCARB Board of Directors, including terms as second vice president, secretary and regional director of NCARB’s Western Conference. Erny opened his own practice, Architects + LLC, in 1983 and continues to serve as the firm’s president. Erny is also a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), having served as president of AIA Northern Nevada and AIA Nevada, and as a current member of the AIA Northern Nevada Scholarship Committee. He graduated from Ball State University with bachelor’s degrees in environmental design and architecture.

Dagher Engineering Principal Josephine Zurica has been named the 2016 American Council of Engineering Companies of New York New Principal of the Year for her significant contributions in the form of ideas and service to the consulting engineering community. Zurica is the first building systems engineer — and only the second woman — to receive this honor, granted since 2001 to a member who has been a principal for less than five years. She is a registered professional engineer with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and master’s degree in environmental engineering. A LEED accredited professional and a Certified Passive House Consultant, Zurica joined Dagher in 2007 and was named principal in 2013. Zurica’s achievements include steering the LEED certification and commissioning for more than 15 buildings and acting as principal engineer on the design of a geothermal system that services 14 buildings on Princeton University’s campus.
